    4AFE Performance

I'll wait awhile for everyone to stop laughing. . . . . . Okay, as silly as it sounds, I'm curious if this engine responds well to intake and exhaust modifications (or are there bottle necks elsewhere that are going to limit this). The stock intake looks pretty restrictive (1996...

    3-Speed Swap for 4-Speed

Scott, I think it is time you gave up your man card :P The only time I was glad I was driving an automatic was when I was stuck in the snow and could push with one leg and reach in and give it gas. As for the 3sp shifting hard, has it always been like that? Mine is far from smooth when I...

    Clutch Replacement Recommendations

We've yet to do it, the OEM clutch is still holding on for it's last little bit of life.

    3-Speed Swap for 4-Speed

I'd be willing to bet the 5sp swap would be cheaper. The procedure for checking the tranny fluid is in the owners manual, but honestly, if it shows up on the dipstick at all, then I highly doubt the fluid is too low for it shift correctly.

    Maximizing Fuel Economy

"You'd also have to assume that, as vehicles speed increases, that the engine, transmission, tires, and wheel bearings do not increase in friction." No, we'd have to assume that as vehicle speed increases, these forces increase linearly with speed. Of course there is going to be increased...

    Maximizing Fuel Economy

We'll have to agree to disagree then, but really it's not that important to me as long as you don't call it a 2 stroke engine. It shares three major similarities with 2 stroke engines (burning oil in the combustion chamber by design, high revving low torque, and a power cycle every revolution)...

    Clutch Replacement Recommendations

Is there any down side to a kevlar clutch? Like is it more grabby?

    Clutch Replacement Recommendations

Because there is possibly a replacement that is superior. Toyota picked a clutch supplier that could offer a clutch that would be reliable, easy to drive (low pedal pressure), and cheap. We're willing to sacrifice two of those. I've heard good things about kevlar clutches, anyone have...

    Maximizing Fuel Economy

I should correct my previous post first, the rotor rotates the eccentric shaft 1 time for every three eccentric shaft revolutions, not the other way around. Yes, pi * r^2 * h is the volume of a cylinder. As for being laughed at? Please, if I posted this conversation on any rotary engine forum...

1996 Geo Prizm 1.6 3-Speed Auto Final Drive Ratio

I can't seem to find the final drive ratio for this transmission anywhere online... I calculated it approximately by knowing 2nd gear tops out at 65 and that the redline is 6000 (I don't have a tach). This came up about 4.1 which sounds reasonable, but I don't think the torque converter locks up...

    Clutch Replacement Recommendations

It could happen. How long is the engine expected to last would you say? Starting out going uphill is harder on clutches, but just going up them with it already engaged isn't going to be harder on it. We don't live in a hill area that requires many hill starts.

    Maximizing Fuel Economy

Efficiency in terms of power output per unit fuel is what I'm talking about. There are many different types of efficiency. A rotary engine is a 4 stroke engine. It has an intake stroke, a compression stroke, a ignition/power stroke, and an exhaust stroke... go ahead and count them. A 4 stroke...

    Maximizing Fuel Economy

    1) Miles per tank is an unreliable and inconsistent measurement of gas mileage. Gas gauge accuracy? Do you fill up at exactly the same gauge location each time? Are you able to accurately tell when you're at that location on the gauge? 2) You probably will get less gas mileage if you floor it...

    Clutch Replacement Recommendations

Thank you for your response. He is having a shop do it, clutch jobs on FWD's are a pain. My dad is very easy on clutches, my mom is okay. Probably the main reason that it wore out a bit prematurely is because both my sister and I learned to drive stick in that car... hahahahaha. We live on a...

    Maximizing Fuel Economy

Also, across all my testing, I've found very insignificant difference between gas stations. Any actual difference would be most likely overcome by the fact that the gas is cheaper.

    Maximizing Fuel Economy

There are several factors at play with fuel economy. Firstly, engines are most efficient, in terms of work done per unit fuel, when working their hardest. This means with the pedal floored and the engine turning at whatever rpm makes peak power (5000-6000 most likely). However, some of that...

    2003 Corolla S - How Can I Improve

Yes, most significant weight reduction I would not recommend for a DD. But it's amazing the pounds you can shave with no drawback if you are in the right mindset.

    3-Speed Swap for 4-Speed

I believe it can be swapped, but the 4sp is electronic and has it's own control unit, while the 3sp is all mechanical. You're better off buying a 4sp car and selling your 3sp car. ORRR... man up and swap in a 5sp.

How Long Has Anyone Run a Timing Belt ?

In my opinion, if you're okay with possibly breaking down at an inconvenient time, then there is no reason to change the belt as preventative maintenance. The 1.6 4afe is a non interference engine. Consider if you will have the ability to tow it home though... because if you have to pay 200...
