I'm thinking about getting a 2010 Toyota Corolla as my first car. Should I consider it?

sorry to hear about your experience. I tend to leave details out of my comments but in general a Corolla is a good buy, however, as with any used car before purchase have a good mechanic check it out to see if there are any issues with it. Any car can be a POS if not maintained well or been abused.

    1.8L oil filter type?

I always buy the 5 litre jug. When I use the remaining oil I have a container that I can put the used oil in to recycle. Here they will only take non-contaminated oil in the original jug for recycling. Last week I did an oil change and I did not have to buy any oil at all, I had enough new oil...

    1.8L oil filter type?

I will advised that there is a clip that you can use a flathead screw driver to gently pry off before removing the filter cap, and the tool is not that expensive. her is a video, actually made by another member.

I'm thinking about getting a 2010 Toyota Corolla as my first car. Should I consider it?

I have a 2013 and it has been great. I will say I have the same issue with the drivers seat lowering itself over time. However, the bottom setting works for me so I don't fret over it. The only thing I have done is brakes, regular oil changes, other than that nothing has gone wrong with it...

    1.8L oil filter type?

My 2013 has a cartridge and while I am not totally sure it is the same car are yours so you likely have a cartridge filter as well. if you do you can't use a spin on without buying a conversion kit. I change my own oil and have no issue with it. You will need a proper tool to fit the housing to...

Changing size of tires from 16" to 17"

the XRS had standard 17 wheels and tires. should be ok. What you need to do is make sure the tires are the same circumference, or as close as you can get to the original 16 size. IF not you risk clearance issue and your speedometer being off.

How to restore the side mirror mounts?

you can get trim restorer and use it on black trim. It will have to be done on a regular basis as it does wear off. I also heard, never tried it, that ceramic coating works good and will last much longer than the restorer.

    What is this?

I am not 100% sure, but I doubt it is emission control, there is nothing in it that can control anything. I since my first response I have removed it again and there is no issue with the car.

Engine shuts off when AC is on in slow traffic

I am not sure what the difference between an automatic and a manual compressor is, to me the compressor would be the same. Are you referring to the center dash AC controls? Automatic controls versus manual controls? If that is the case there may be an issue when the AC is on to tell the computer...

2013 Toyota Corolla LE 1.8 AC issues

I agree on an independent shop. Be sure it's reliable and they know AC. It might need a compressor, but I think $1200 is a bit much. A reputable shop may charge less if it is in fact a compressor issue. There will of course likely be a charge to diagnose for you but if it turns out that all it...

What's the best method for reading the flat oil dipstick?

as long as the level is in between those indentations you are fine, however stopping gravity from making the oil dip off the stick is a problem. My stick is different, but the oil also wants to run down and drip off the end, all I can suggest is to be a little quicker in pulling it out and...

    Gas mileage drop off

To change fuel filter you likely have to pull the sending unit out of the gas tank. Not necessarily hard to do but you have to take the back seat out and go through an access panel. Before you do that do as suggested check mass air flow sensor, you can get CRC mass airflow cleaner and try that...
