Radio Rebooting?

#51
Thanks, Julie. I found that video a couple months ago and tried disconnecting the battery and pumping the brakes but to no avail..... :(

I'm going to call the dealer one more time to see if they can load up new software manually, but I suspect I'll be taking Chris' advice in the end and replacing it with a Kenwood....

1 - WOW! There a ton of Entune problems identified in the TSB. Hopefully Toyota has decided to put better systems in their cars moving forward.
And those are the identified ones. Who knows what else might be triggered by connecting a new or updated device. For what it’s worth, Entune 3.0 ditched Blacberry QNX OS for an Auto-Grade Linux OS. On the other hand, Ford ditched Microsoft-Automative for QNX and it's was deemed as an improvement…
2 - I forgot to mention that my auto mechanic (non-Toyota guy that I regularly go to when our warranties expire) indicated that he checked the service bulletin and saw that stalled reboot was a known issue. That's why I was particularly annoyed when the service guy at Toyota didn't seem to have a clue what I was talking about. The TSB gives clear instructions on how to update the system -- why wasn't my Toyota service rep able to figure this out????
Some of them are up to it, others are rather full of it. Especially when it comes to electronics. I own an old yet reliable Nokia “smart phone” (as “smart” as they were many years ago). When I bought my Corolla, the tech tried but failed to pair it and deemed it incompatible. It’s not the case and I had no trouble pairing it myself. The thing is they are no computer technicians and firmware suppliers will work on identified bugs. But if there is no one to identify them… So they’ll simply propose to change the head-unit while the problem might have another source.
3 - With a few more Google searches, I saw that Toyota has started offering updates online. However, when I checked on available downloads I got messages that I had to take the car in to Toyota to get the update. Helpful but not helpful.
The name of the site says it: “Toyota Multimedia and Audio System Updates for Entune App Suite”. It updates apps – and eventually the OS if and as required by the app – but not the OS itself.
4 - I spend a lot of time in my car and need a good integrated system to take hands-free phone calls. It's a safety issue and a legal issue -- if consumers buy a car with the expectation that it will have certain safety features, then those safety features should last more than 2.5 years before completely failing.
You are right, but it's still covered by the same warranty as other systems in the car (or the owner, after warranty ended…), no more no less (well, less in some cases like for Hyndai-Kia Canada…). The problem is not hands-free phone itself. For 2014 MY, this feature existed even in the basic non-Entune radio. It’s rather all those others fancy features some want with it. Indeed, when a failure occur, it also apply to hands-free calls…
5 - I get it that electronics need constant updates and software eventually becomes obsolete, but not in 2.5 years!!! I've had iPhones and iPads that I've kept for years and the only problem I've had is that they no longer can accept software update due to lack of compatibility -- eventually I've needed to upgrade to newer units, but they didn't completely stall and stop working when newer versions came out!!
Actually, some home/personnal devices will freeze, crash or behave erratically over an update or even original firmware glitches. iOS 11 was loaded with bugs that did so . Windows 10 could kill the sound of your computer. But why would this device be affected and that identical one be OK? Because bugs are often triggered by a specific configuration, use of a combination of key, etc. If you don’t happen to use them, you’re OK, otherwise…

Granted some crack eventually find a convoluted way to sqirt the problem and a patch is eventually available. And we’re talking firms working on their own eco-system and releasing it when they are “good and ready”. Car systems, on the other hand, are always on catch-up mode, dealing with a multitude of apps updates and new devices over a 2.5 years period. Everything may go well for some but that’s a lot of bug triggering opportunity depending on how one use the head unit! The reset button (holding “power”) or the battery trick might work for some bugs, not all.

All in all, that might explain why techs would rather simply change the head-unit… to no good since the conditions that triggered a problem might be met again. That’s to explain – not excuse – why the fancier the car system, the higher the risks. And they say autonomous cars are almost here…Yeah, right !
Toyota (and apparently other manufacturers) need to figure out a way to conveniently deliver software updates to consumers over longer periods of time. I'm not forced to go to the Apple store and pay to have my iPhone updated every time new software is released -- nor should I have to return to Toyota to get my Entune software updated. It's 2018, guys, figure this one out!
That I don't understand either. Those systems have existed for what, 8 years now ? Tesla manage entire cars updates over the air... And maybe using open source firmware would allow cracks to identify problems much faster.

Hi there,
I just started having the same problem and the radio keeps rebooting continuously and that is becoming a distraction issue specially when driving at night because the navigation screen light hits the eyes.
I took my car to the dealership where i bout my car and they tried disconnecting the battery and open the whole nav unit and reinstall it they charged me $75 without solving the issue!
And they told me that my radio system is dead and i need a new unit for $2000.
Let me know if anyone has fixed this issue please.

Hi all,

I was able to fix the radio rebooting on my own by buying the radio on Ebay. I have a Toyota Corolla 2014 S. The dealership wanted to charge me $1,400 to fix it, I said NO! Not to mention that they charged me $90 just to look at it, without resolving.

So i went on Youtube and found a video that teaches you how to unmount the radio, you just need some basic tools that i actually bought at Home Depot. Link here:

Tools cost: $47 (returned it 15 days later)

Radio cost: $244. I tried to attach a link for the buyer who happens to have really high ratings on ebay, but this forum says i am too new. The guy is reliable, super fast delivery. Radio works perfect. Please note the radios he sells have no GPS, but who cares, Toyota’s GPS is horrible anyways.

I hope this helps guys, i am happy as of now with how easy it was to do it myself.

Sincerely,

Osman

Osman – great idea to get the system on eBay and replace it yourself. That’s probably the cheapest and most hassle-free approach. Hopefully the same reboot problem won’t arise a couple years down the road.

To continue my own saga from my posts above, I decided to give Toyota a couple more chances to get it right and fix the problem with a simple software install. I called the dealership that I normally go to near my home and asked them if they could try to do a simple USB software install, but no deal – they insisted that I had to bring the car in and leave it for a few hours so they could do full diagnostic testing. I’ve seen enough posts on this and other blogs to know that their diagnostic testing usually ends with a huge bill to replace the unit so I decided to try my luck with a dealership closer to where I work. After waiting on hold for lengthy periods of time and several disconnects I finally got a guy who said that he knew about the problem and he could easily do the software installation at no cost. Then when I brought the car in for the software update I got a completely different story – They had never heard of the problem before and I would have to leave the car for a few hours so they could do full diagnostic testing etc, etc, etc.

I finally decided to go the aftermarket route and got a nice Kenwood system that I’m very happy with. I paid ~ $500 for the Kenwood system and then another $200 for labor and additional parts (cables and interface adapters needed for compatibility with steering wheel controls, rear camera and USB port). The cost was about half of the lowest Toyota cost for replacement that I’ve seen in online blogs and the system has much better sound and more features than the Toyota Entune systems.

Overall conclusion: don’t bother dealing with Toyota when this problem comes up. Either follow Osman’s suggestion and get another unit on eBay or follow Chris’ advice above and go straight for an aftermarket system.

Well said gentleman.
I put a Kenwood in mine, and I wasn’t even having issues with the OE unit.
I listen to all types of music and I choose sound quality above all else!
Do you still have steering wheels controls and back up camera that work like OEM but with your aftermarket?

Do you still have steering wheels controls and back up camera that work like OEM but with your aftermarket?
Yes, but you need to purchase additional wiring harnesses and control interfaces and it will cost extra in labor charges (this was the extra $200 I referred to above).

Make sure you tell your installer that you want to retain these options when you schedule your installation appointment so that they can give you an accurate cost estimate for labor and parts and order the necessary items. I actually got my installer to send me a list of the parts required in advance of the appointment and I then ordered them myself from Amazon and saved $85 vs the cost that the installation service would have charged.

Yes, everything works, but its a little different. You have the ability to program the steering wheel controls to the way you like.
I upgraded my Maestro from 2.0 to 2.1, thinking I would get more functionality from it. Nope, instead my backup camera remains on until I perform some other function. Its a glitch in the firmware and I will be talking with iDatalink tomorrow about rolling back to 2.0.

I run a professional dealer electronics service business, we specialize in handling electronics products for new and used car dealerships and the largest Toyota dealership in the area is my biggest customer.

I hate to tell you all this, but the majority of the time you’ll have to replace the radio. The problem occurs on many late model Toyotas RAV4s from 2014 and up with the color touchscreen and usually navigation. I have primarily seen this issue on route RAV4s and Corollas but a few other vehicles may also be affected. The problem is found with those radios manufactured by a company called Fujitsu-Ten, who has recently gone out of business. In every case the cause is the same: a defective CPU on the circuitboard. Companies who repair radios for car dealerships are well aware of this issue and the only fix is to replace the CPU, and that typically costs me $500 or so. Naturally I mark that up a little bit to the dealership and charge for my labor pulling the radio shipping it off and reinstalling it when it comes back two or three weeks later. Even then you still have a used radio and no guarantee that you won’t have other problems down the road. You’re much better off simply replacing the radio with a good quality aftermarket product for around the same money - That’s what the used car manager at my Toyota dealership has me do whenever they trade for a vehicle that has this issue. There are rare instances where a software update or the battery disconnect has solve the problem, but I have never yet seen that work. I suspect that in situations where that solved the problem, your radio has a different problem or is made by different manufacturer (Panasonic also makes a radio for Toyota that looks exactly the same).

Hey none of you all will be surprised but my screen seems to miss calibrated so I can use my bottom buttons since there is nowhere to click below it. I went to the dealership and after 5 mins they told me, I needed a new radio and that it would be $1000. After saying how I didn't want to pay that much they recommended I go to best buy.

I went to best buy and the guy after hearing that I had a 2014 Carolla starts telling me its going to be $500 just to hook a radio to my car because of the backup camera and steering controls, plus the radio. If I was looking at that much money I might as well get Toyota.

So I go back to the dealership. After asking if they could try anything else they disconnected my positive in the battery for a hot second and then reconnected it to see if that would work. It did not work and I think the tech new that. So after discussing the price of the new radio, I asked if I would be getting the same radio and they said yes and that it would be reburished. I asked about a warranty and they said only a year. I asked what I was supposed to do if the new radio did the same thing? He said then we would look for a new update! (What!!!!!) I said why can't you do an update now? He said then what year was your car again? (Really!!!). I said a 2014. He says then why didn't I think of that before? (Really!!!) So they said that it would be $60 for an update and 30 minutes later they come back and tell me there are no updates available. Well, I found the update through someone on this board and did it myself. I am so disappointed with the service I got in Asheville.

This is shady!!! Please dont spend money on any technology issues without doing your research because Toyota is not only not taking responsibility for their technology but they are not training their staff or technicians to be reliable about it.

So you were able to download the update and successfully install it? Great! I tried downloading it through a link I found here and just got an error message. I then took a USB stick to Toyota and asked for the software and they refused to provide it -- said I would need to leave the car for several hours so they could run a full set of diagnostics ($$$$$). I finally got a Kenwood and had it installed at Best Buy (which was a whole other nightmare experience). Saved a couple hundred bucks by getting a package deal and buying the extra adapter cables from Amazon, but still..... Toyota could certainly make it easier for their customers!

I just bought my Toyota Corolla 2014 just about a year ago and I was told to bring it in to the dealership and they would fix it. I told them I am not paying for anything. They said they would fix it. When I brought it in they slapped me with an $89 just to look at it fee. I told them they could have the car back as I've already paid them $4000 over blue book value and I'm upside down on the note. My credit is maxed. They acted like they have never seen this problem before. I told them to look its iall over the internet. Jeff Wyler of Indiana threatened to call the law on me if I didn't remove my car from their lot. I have reported this problem to Toyota headquarters, they said that they have never heard about it. If everyone complains about it we all can have our radios fixed free of charge.

This problem started for me just this last weekend. I called entune customer service and support who told me I needed a firmware update. I got it to the dealer on Tuesday, after I tried several things myself. Unhooked the battery, took the dash off as suggested in the video, unhooked and re plugged in everything. Still no success. Dealer also says I need a new system and they can't update the firmware. I notice my USB doesn't work to charge my phone which might be significant, but I don't know. I have had this car less than a year. I'm also out of warranty with only 43000 on my Corolla. All I can say is I'm disgusted with the service I got from the dealer I took my car too. I know that there have been several people with the same issue. Please post if you find a solution.

There's a YouTube video of a guy that found a fix for this. It v worked on my entune radio on my 2014 Corolla S!
Apparently there the guy found a Best buy tech that shared the information with him.
He says to disconnect the negative connection on your battery. Pump your brakes at least ten times. Reconnect and start your car. It works like a charm & saved me lots of money!
Thank you very much for posting this fix....... but unfortunately it did NOT fix my radio.... I cleaned my battery terminals and cable ends (like I have done on thousands of cars - retired ASE auto tech) and my Entune radio started rebooting over and over again. I saw this video on You tube when I first encountered this issue and tried it.... but no help.

Hi There, I purchased Toyota Sport 6 mos. ago and I have this same problem, I went to dealer they said they couldn't update because it would not boot up on their system, they said hard drive is gone and it would cost me 6k to replace whole unit, which I find totally stupid. Why can't your replace or fix hard drive I don't get there meaning of hard drive gone, I don't run photoshop or word that could crash system or I don't think there was a major power surge. Only thing I can think of is that I did replace the battery about week before but still everything worked fine for that week. So I'm really not sure what's going on, but I know from research that it's happening to a lot of people and Toyota won't do anything to help unless it's under warranty, which is crazy to have a warrant for just basically a display unit. with a touch screen.

Hi there I already posted on another post but I'm thinking since no one has had much success is because of cheap factory hardware, like I said I took mine to dealer and they couldn't update firmware because it wouldn't boot up on their system and so they told me my hard drive is gone with no explanation as how this could happen. Maybe faulty cheap hard drives and a money grab because there is no fix except replace for 6k. My phone runs more programs than my car does.

I've run into this same problem today. I work at a Toyota dealer and they tried updating but said that the radio kept freezing in the middle of the update so, they said that it needs to be replaced. Of course mine is also a 2014 and I have 75K miles and am out of warranty. We should not have to worry about investing money into a radio system this soon into ownership!
Hi there I have the exact year and 70k and they told me same thing has to be replaced, they said hard drive is gone without any ideas how that could happen. They said it wouldn't boot up on their system, so I don't know if it really hardware but leaning towards software.

This happened to my daughters 2014 Corolla S 2 days ago. She took it to the Toyota dealer and they told her it would be $1,000 to fix it. Her car just hit...drum roll please....70,000 miles. Her mom bought the car new and gave it to our daughter as a graduation present. A big reason she bought a Toyota was because they are bulletproof...reliable as hell. Or at least they used to be. The mileage should not impact a radio. And to have this happen on a 4 year old car is totally unacceptable. I'm so ticked off at this right now that I'm ready to take her down and trade it on a Kia. I mean...if Toyota is going to lower their standards to Kia quality, we might as well just pay less and get the Kia. Oh yeah....she went top dog on it and got a GPS ($2K additional cost) which no longer works.
Hi there your story is my story exactly, just got my Toyota for all the same reasons you did always wanted one, same year as yours and and problem at same mileage. Same problem with no fix in sight, went to dealer and they couldn't reset could not even boot it up to their system, worked perfect since I bought the car 6 months ago and I assume it worked fine for previous owner, so anyway dealer said hard drive gone, I didn't get into specifics but I can't understand how a hard drive just goes, talked to a computer tech friend and he even doubts there is a hard drive, he thinks it's SSD which is same kind of guts as your phone, solid state. Anyway don't buy Kia I have had bad experience with them too and I thought they were the next Honda or Toyota. So I don't think there is a solution, I think the tech at the dealer I went to must have been drinking because he told me I had to replace and the cost would be 6 thousand dollars all in. I have seen other posts on this site with people getting quotes of 3 thousand, and also fixed around 12 hundred. ?????

First off, yes an SSD can fail. The only difference between the HDD and SSD is an HDD is mechanical. If it is a 'hard drive' failing, could be a bad batch of SSD's provided by the manufacturer of the head units. I also find it odd to be '14-'15 model years with around 70k miles. Why 70k?

That said, I feel bad for those of you dealing with this. I hope there is a permanent fix besides replacing it (stock or aftermarket). I'm also hoping the '17+ have a different radio and don't have these issues popping up later too.

I've been to several dealerships about this, armed with the Toyota Technical Service Bulletin (T-SB-0015-15) which highlights the problems with this system. Mine started at 43000 miles. Like it was programmed to fail after the warranty ran out. I've gotten the same story ($1200 for a new head unit) from every dealer, usually with a knowing smirk when I describe the problem. ToyotaCare was anything but. I told them I would organize all those affected and file suit. This is nothing short of ransomware. I am shopping for legal representation now, and will be reaching out on forums like this to gather interested parties.

My radio just recently went black and then started to what looks like rebooting. The progress bar gets just to the end and then goes black again and starts rebooting. Any know if there is a simple fix to this? Car is a 2014 Corolla S with the navigation, 78k miles.

Looks like my front speakers are beginning to either not work, one will and not the other, I have to crank up the volume high and it seems like the bass vibration resolved it temporarily. Vibration causing wires to make contact?

I read somewhere that they had this issue where front speakers connectors were corroded. Where do they the part for this and how hard is it to fox?

I'm assuming you need to disassemble the door to get to wiring, anyone have a walkthrough for this?

That makes me think if this could be the culprit of our radios rebooting due to corroded wiring in the speakers. Makes sense but would like to know what you guys think about this since I'm just speculating. Thanks in advance!

Having the same issue which just started occurring on our 2014 Carolla S with navigation. Car turned 70,000 miles and now the radio has gone into the same reboot state as described by others. Not sure where to go from here, sounds like Best Buy is the only real option. For those who switched their radio’s, which brand did you go with and what was the price when all was said and done? Thanks

My 2014 Toyota Corolla S has 113,000 miles. I just bought it 6 months ago. No warranty offered due to the mileage. Very angry as I bought Toyota because they are supposed to be reliable. Let me know if there is a lawsuit. i will have to get a new radio.

After brining our car to the dealership multiple times to no avail I finally decided to replace the radio myself. After researching online for hours I found a lot of people stating that the radio could be swapped out with the non navigation unit without any issues so I decided to give it a try.

Our existing radio was having the boot issue and the Face ID was 100150 the navigation unit. I looked online on eBay and junk yard searches and found that the cheapest I would be able to find the 100150 unit was for roughly $500-$800 at junkyards. Instead I decided to install the Face ID 100149 which is a lot more common and was able to find it at a local salvage place for $50 which was a deal since eBay even had them selling for $150-$300.

The removal of the existing radio was simple and all the connections for the most part were plug and play. The radio worked fine and all the features including the steering wheel, reverse camera and Bluetooth connection worked without any issues.

Only problem I realized is that the front door speakers are not working at all which does present you with some issues. Not sure why they don’t work and if the connections in the back of the radio differs based on the model or how the radio interprets the different signals. If anyone has any insight on this I am open ears, I tried researching wiring digrams but I’m not a install professional so didn’t really want to mess with it too much. The main issue that we have with the front speakers not working is that when you are on a Bluetooth call it seems that the default feature is for the call to come through the front speakers only and with only the small tweeters working you can barely hear the person on the phone.

If anyone can help with the front speaker issue please let me know. For everyone else who is sick of dealing with dealerships and Toyota in general and wants a cheap alternative try finding the 100149 Face ID at a local junk yard and replace it yourself.

It’s the speaker wires! They’re corroded!

Taking my panels off now.

Didn’t have an issue still I moved to San Francisco right by the Pacific Ocean. I’m beating the wires are shorting. Killing the radios. My speakers had been having issues from time to time at lower volumes. 150,000 miles on a 2014 Corolla S. The speaker issue came up around 70,000 and now I’m stuck in the reboot. I doubt this will fix the radio which the short has probably killed. But will at least keep it from killing the next.

Contact Toyota and file and complaint with a case number. With enough complaints maybe they will do a recall and we can all be reimbursed. This is such a nightmare. I’m currently researching after market units.

Hello,

I have a Corolla S 2014. 80K miles. Suddenly started getting the reboot issues. I read through this forum and figured I would have to replace my radio, however it looks like there is a newer software update than what was available when most of these comments were left. I did the software update and it fixed my radio rebooting issue. You can get the update here: https://www.toyota.com/audio-multimedia/#!/select-model

I will say again, A newer update DID FIX my radio. it no longer reboots.

How are you able to update when it continually reboots? When my radio is looping through its reboot cycle, it only gets about a quarter of the way through the load screen and then starts over. It doesnt allow me to get to the screen for manual updates and the USB port doesn't work :/

IDK what to tell you. Mine wouldn't reboot muh until I had been driving for a while, and then it would eventually start rebooting constantly. With the car cold I was able to get through it without issue. The update process does take about 20 minutes.

Don’t worry about the radio rebooting. You can buy a replacement on eBay 50$ threw 600 at the most. There easy to replace and I upgraded mine to the navigation system for 200$, the radio came out of a Tacoma but it was also used in the Siena van but the eq built into the radio sounds best from a tecoma truck

I opened it face cover and take off the audio compartment to check any wire or other issue. Can't find any thing wrong. I think it the circuit board itself. It likes a tablet firmware got corrupted not able to finish boot up process. if anyone like to check it not cause by corrosion of speaker wire. you could only jump the brown wire (ground down side pin 4) and gray and light blue wire (12v up side pin 1, pin 2) to try to power it up to see if any wrong with speaker wire corrosion. My audio still can't boot up. Since have to instruction to reload firmware, I have to look for a replacement from eBay or junk yard. audio1.jpeg audio2.jpeg

Hi everybody,
The wife has a 2019 Corolla SE with the basic non-Nav stereo. I wanted to upgrade her stereo to one with NAV. I seen this one on EBay, made by Panasonic (86100-08031). This should fit, correct? Will I need a GPS antenna?

Thx,

My radio just recently went black and then started to what looks like rebooting. The progress bar gets just to the end and then goes black again and starts rebooting. Any know if there is a simple fix to this? Car is a 2014 Corolla S with the navigation, 78k miles.

I have read a lot of comments below. I faced same issue and solution is very simple. The control board behind the car tape is faulty and gives this error on the screen. I simply had it replaced in an electronic shop for about 80usd and it was back on. It's a common defect for these Fijustsi ten devices. Toyota will not support you. You just need part replaced or your buy a new tape lol

Where did you purchase / repair the control board?
