86sr5 trannie fluid. what type?

I've got 86 sr5 with 3speed auto with push button overdrive. Haynes manual says type f atf. Guy at Lordco gave me Pennzoil dex/merc atf. Says for use in previously serviceable by dexron 3 and met on brand. Should I just take fluid back and replace it with type f like manual says or can I use it. Stuck off the grid. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers

Type F does not contain friction modifiers, it was originally designed for automatic transmissions with bronze clutch packs.
Dexron/mercon contains the friction modifiers needed for most modern clutch packs used since the late 1970's

Owners manual would be best resource if you still have it, or maybe a call to a Toyota dealer's parts dept.
