It is official, I've lost all faith in humanity...

I decided to stop off at a local shopping mall on the way home from work for some groceries as I typically would do after a long day at work. As usual I parked in a covered parking lot, away from other cars to keep my 2015 Corolla S from getting door dinged. A half hour later, I am greeted by this

Its obvious to me that someone didn't like Kaley the Corolla so the only logical way to show such emotion was to drop kick the passenger side front fender... That's not possible, you say? Someone must have backed into it with their car and took off, right? Nope, no signs of scratches or paint transfer from another vehicle, just two foot-sized dents.. It is official, I've lost all faith in humanity.

I am so sorry this had happened to you. I would also be in a way surprised to see someone so unhappy with themselves and having an angry feeling of not only wanting to have what someone else has, but damaging someone else's property.
Did you try to find surveillance cameras in the area to find that inferior human being?

Yeah, it definitely looks like the damage was inflicted by a foot or perhaps a fist or elbow. I think sometimes people get offended (I don't know why?) when people park their new car far away from the pack in an effort to keep it from getting dinged. I think in the mind of some people they see it as "he thinks he's better than me, I'll show him". Not defending or condoning it in any way, and I'd be as angry as you are - I try to park far away too and am amazed at the number of times somebody is still right on top of me despite there being dozens or more or closer spaces. On the (somewhat) bright side, it looks like it only affects the one body panel so it should keep the costs down. Most stores' parking lots do use security cameras, so you might pick up something on that. But trying to identify the culprit would still be very difficult. The cameras are mainly there not to protect shoppers but to get footage of someone who might vandalize the store or to catch shoplifters after they have exited the store. I imagine those dents are too big to be done paintless but possibly, that art is getting pretty advanced now.

I will try calling the mall to see if there were cameras and I'll also call the non-emergency police line to report the vandalism but as you say I doubt it'll do much good. Yes, the damage is only on the fender from what I can see so it shouldn't be too costly. My insurance deductible is $300 so at least that isn't too bad.

Hard to say if they'll just get you a new panel and get it painted or repair the dents and repaint. On the OUTSIDE chance a PDR guy can do it, I'd at least look into it. My next choice would be a new panel rather than filling the dents. Just be sure new panel is OEM. They aren't all that costly.

I would be shocked if a mall didn't have cameras. They might have a policy against giving footage to anyone that asks for it, so they might say that or just lie and say they don't have cameras. You might want to ask what kind of documentation they want before giving you the footage. Good luck, and that sucks, but at least to my untrained eye, it could be a relatively simple fix with PDR. Get an estimate before filing an insurance claim, because if it raises your rates for something like 24 months, it could cost you more in the long run.

The security guy seemed really interested in looking into it but says that my car was out of range of the cameras so there goes that. I don't see my rate increasing since the claim is for vandalism and not an accident. Here's to hoping...

I'm hoping for a new fender.. It'll help me sleep better at night haha
I would rather have a PDR repair than a new fender if it were me. Better to have factory paint all around. It may not be possible though as the dents are fairly large and there are creases built into the design of the panel which may interfere

If I caught the person, I would have kicked in there head!! No one will mess with The Punisher!!
Oh believe me, if I saw it go down my temper would have gotten the best of me and there's no telling what I'd have done to them.. it's for the best though because in this world we live in you can't even look at someone without getting sued. It's cheaper to just pay my insurance deductible than to hire a lawyer lol

I'm not condoning this action as I would be completely irate if this happened to me, but were you taking up more than one spot? Even if you're in the back of the lot some jerks would still see you as arrogant for taking up multiple spots. That's why I park next to a curb at the back of the lot. That way I'm in only one spot and no one can ding me without parking in my spot with me.

Well, our cars aren't exactly unique. Maybe it was a case of mistaken identity? Maybe it had nothing to do with where you parked. Anyway, I feel your pain, my last car was hit and run after I had it for less than six months. It really hurts.

I recommend getting the BlackVue 650 dash cam (or something similar) that has a front and rear camera that will automatically save recordings when it detects being hit while parked. If I had that in my last car, I would have been able to identify the person who crushed the the hatchback and drove off.

My old Focus has now been involved in 5 hit and runs, so I feel your pain. Only one of those were caught and that was because my neighbor happened to be gardening and was able to recognize the person who he observed. I am currently in the process of getting a twin channel dash cam for my Corolla because of just how crazy drivers are becoming. Especially if you are involved in an incident that boils down to your word versus their word, you can get royally screwed by some POS and their POS lawyer.

As all who read your post, I'm very sorry to read what happened to your car, and of course, it is sad to know that someone would do this kind of damage just for the sake of it. For one side the bright and creative minds that build these beautiful and useful machines, on the other side, the people that work very hard to buy them, and then the others...it is not just the damage and expense, but also all you had to go through in order to repair your car, but congratulations to you, as you have taken the right decision as you are going through this ugly event with high spirit and in peace!

That sucks...do you have any enemies? I feel you though. I am like you I carefully choose where I park away from all the congestion and people walking around wherever I go esp in a busy place. I think a specialists can easily pop it back into place if not already fix.

The fender was replaced and paint matched. They did a fantastic job.

We all are very glad to know you have repaired your car to its original shape! Since you had a Corolla one older generation, can you make comparisons? Which one is more comfortable?
