99 Corolla knocking noise revisted

#1
Guys- Need some help/ideas on this knocking/tapping noise coming from my son's corolla. He has the 1zz Fe motor. The car has ~130K miles. Sounds like a valve to me. I have checked the valve clearance and both the intake and exhaust are in spec. Short of pulling the cams and digging deeper, thought I would ask for help. please see video on the link. any help with be much appreciated.

pull the spark plugs and see if there's any damage to them. If you see any damage it may help you determine if a certain cylinder sustained anything catastrophic. once you pull the plugs use a flashlight to look into the cylinder. If you have a snake camera even better. you can check out the top of the piston and cylinder walls for marring or scratches. IF it turns out to be piston slap issues, don't waste anytime trying to machine it. 1ZZFE's are everywhere! slap a new one in and enjoy another 100K+ miles

oh and you didn't mention it but I'm assuming you checked the oil. If there's any milkshake with that noise I'd be inclined to put a new used motor in rather than trying to rebuild

Already did a compression check on all cyclinders and they look good. Plugs didn't show any abnormal wear either. Pulled the cams and measured the tappets. 4 of them are off. 3 on the exhuast and 1 on the instake side. Looking at the timing chain, I can see where it has been rubbing. Going to replace the tappets that are out, taiming chain, and tensioner.

good stuff. found this video on youtube regarding the clearance and tappets. I'm sure Toyota would just say replace the tappets and valves (if necessary) but maybe it'll help save some money. wish I had more input but I've never tried it
