2016 Corolla S break in period?

#1
I am picking up my new 2016 Corolla S a this Saturday and I'm wondering if there is a specific break in period? The dealership said drive it like you stole it but the owners manual states a vague break in period ,is the break period necessary ? Also the dealership stated I do not need to worry about changing my oil's early but many mechanics say after 1000 Kilometres or so you should change the engine oil and transmission oil to get the metal fragments out what are your thoughts ?

The OM (at least canadian) is rather specific on break-in, albeit with a very short list of "not to do". That's modern cars.
Same goes for early oil change : no more necessary but you'll get polarized opinion on that. Personally I go according to OM.
If the trans is a CVT, leave it alone : changing CVT fluid is a delicate operation. OM recommend 30K inspection / 60K change

"Breaking in your new Toyota - To extend the life of the vehicle, observing the following precautions is recommended:
●For the first 186 miles (300 km): •Avoid sudden stops.
●For the first 621 miles (1000 km): • Do not drive at extremely high speeds.• Avoid sudden acceleration.• Do not drive continuously in low gears.• Do not drive at a constant speed for extended periods."

Do you think it's safe to take on the highway?

totally agree. Let everyone fly by you, just wave and say Hey like my new car. Who is driving it you or the Sales person?

I changed my oil at 600 miles, I now need not to worry bout anything else.

We all love to drive differently and don't floor it build up the spend and let off meaning you don't have to be speedy Gonzolas or Drive it like you stole it

Congrads on your new car. You'll love it

break-in periods are all about variable RPM. with a CVT, I'm not really sure how that would work... It's certainly harder for you to control.

...but this question comes up a LOT with race bikes. "I just got a fresh engine build on my R6 - should I take it easy on the track for a few weekends, or just go race it?"

The dyno runs are generally sufficient break-in. For a street vehicle, I would try to find a state route with a 55-65 mph speed limit, and periodic traffic lights. For once in your life, you WANT to get stopped at the lights. The idea is to accelerate (briskly, but not flooring it), then drop back down to idle. Then repeat.

Modern engines are not nearly as finicky as their 70's (or even 90's) predecessors. The machining is better, and the tolerances are more uniform. Change your oil after 1,000 miles for peace of mind, but I really wouldn't "worry" about break-in.
