2001 Prizm - Can I Install a Gauge Box With a Tachometer?

My car is a 2001 Chevy Prizm; it’s the same as a Toyota Corolla, made in the same plant in Southern California. It has a 5 speed, manual transmission but no tachometer, which is just wrong.

I have 2 questions.

1 – If I buy a gauge box/instrument cluster that has a tachometer and swap it, will the tachometer work without having to run any wires?

I asked this question to three Ebay sellers and one said yes, one said no and the other guy had no clue.

2 – Can I remove the odometer or the odometer and speedometer and install the original to keep the correct mileage?

Thank you much :)

Theoretically it should work, because the wiring should be there for it. If the plugs are the same between the non-tach and tach versions, then you should be set.

As far as the odometer ... those are digital displays right? If they are mechanical displays, you certainly can swap. If they are digital, you need to have a dealership program the correct mileage, as the mileage info will be stored in one of the chips, and finding information about how to change the number yourself will be tough since most manufacturers don't want that known.

Apparently, number of miles is stored in the odometer.

Thanks for your help, Donabed.

The odometer is digital. I did a search and found a similar question for a 2003 Corolla. Mine is a 2001, and I know the 2003 Corolla is the next generation. Still, I expect the Corolla engineers did things in much the same way, going from the 2001 Corolla to the 2003 Corolla.

The question is - Where is the number of miles stored? Apparently that number is stored in the odometer, so all I have to do is swap the odometers.

The next sentence below is the key point.

"You can buy odometers on ebay and the mileage is stored in the odometer itself."
