Annoying CVT Whine

#1
So ive had my 2014 Corolla S for almost a year now and its creeping up on 20k miles. since last week i noticed that if i drove the car a lot all day or pushed it hard on the highway the cvt would start whining really loud, almost like i had a supercharger. anyone else have this happen to them?

I can't really compare on the 20k because mine doesn't even have 2k lol but what I did notice when I excercised my engine on sports mode for a while the engine would give of the hint of something burning not strong or anything but enough to smell it. Maybe it was just the engine breaking in ;)

yeah mine is pretty loud. it seems like its a really loud transmission, just the engine usually drones the sound out. when i rev the engine and then let off the pedal so the engine RPMs drop and the trans is still moving fast i can hear the whining pretty clearly

I have 2013 corolla auto thinking of trading for new but terrified of the bad reports about cvt in new model
Which bad reports ? In 5 years worldwide (3 in NA) no single tread/surge of complaints has appear. That's beside personal preferences (that's OK !).
CVTs do sound different, as rpm are held instead of constantly going up and down. That's what some call whining, rubber bad effect, drone effect, sluggishness, slipping.
That's ear perception VS other trans type but pure "performance" number shows it's faster and more economical than the old 4AT. All in all, the 11th gen is much quieter than older ones.
Toyota kind of counter it with fake shift points (programmed up/down in revs to please some ears) and manual control (paddle shifters in S).
It was fear that this difference in sound would alienate spectators that lead to ban them from F1. Because from a performance point of view, they are great.

Don't worry there aren't any problems with the transmission it works perfectly for what it was designed for =). and you can also get the 6-Speed manual transmission if you don't like auto or cvt trans.

do you think an exhaust or transmission cooler would fix the problem?

So, what is the status of the noise that some of you have? My 2017 LE is suddenly starting to make this noise just under 37k miles. It sounds a lot like a supercharger whine and I mainly hear it at low speeds under normal acceleration. It even makes the noise while coasting. I'm taking it to the dealer (have a certification warranty till Oct) but I'm having doubts they'll even do anything about it.

Sounds like you cooked the transmission fluid. Sport mode is a marketing gimmick that I'd advise not using unless you are driving on curvy backroads under 35MPH
