2012 Corolla - LE ABS Question

I bought 2012 Corolla LE from a used car lot a few weeks ago. It had 19,000 miles on the odometer, it looks pristine inside and out.

My question is as follows: when on a turn while driving on ice and the car skids a little, a sort of rattling noise from the back end can be heard for a second or two. I imagine that this noise is created by the stability control. Is this noise normal?

you are traveling faster than you should, slow down to avoid it from overpowering and avoid the car to go into a slide. ABS will Pulse to stop, way faster than you can think.

Pay attention to the center Light, on your dash, if you ignore it, a chime can be heard, ignore that, you will get a slowdown. ignore that, you are getting the last part that may one day damage your car down the road constantly. Over heating the system, neglecting it, are two thing s that prematurely wears things down.

Thanks. But I am not driving too fast. What happens in the interior of Alaska (Fairbanks), is that black ice builds up at the street corner. Crushed gravel is used by the DOT to aid with traction, but every now and then there is a bare spot and by the time you see it is too late. One still can make the corner at a very low speed (I was doing maybe 3-5MPH) without using the brake, but with a FWD the only way to have the wheels pulling the car in the right direction is by not pulling your foot completely off the gas pedal. Now, with a RWD I would turn the wheel in the direction of the skid as I let off the gas momentarily.

I was just surprised of how loud the Corolla's stability control is. My wife's 2010 Rav 4 is almost silent. You still can feel the brakes pulsating, but on a lateral skid the only noise if the warning light and chime.

Lets clear this up, we are talking about the ABS Auto brake system, not the Traction control.

ABS no matter how hard you apply that brake, the car will pulse to stop, faster than you can think. Enough for you to say hey should I get off the brake, and do it myself. If your tires are incorrectly inflated, worn, one, or two, best fix it before you get into trouble.

If you are talking about the traction system yes it is a noisy system, even the undercarriage, a rock under it, you can hear it travel, loudly. The traction system is enterly different than the ABS, it will not allow the car to drive if it SLIPS, you will be giving gas, and the car will not go anywhere.

So I think there is and was a misunderstanding and I agree, about the road conditions, weight added and how you go about it will come out a winner.

Yes, I was referring to the traction control (or stability control). When this system comes into play to reduce skids, specially the lateral skids encountered on turns. In this case the stability control manages torque to the wheels as well as ABS. It is the same way on the Rav 4, except that since it is a 4WD system both torque and ABS are controlled on the four wheels, the rear ones momentarily. On the Corolla only ABS to the rear and front wheels, and torque to the front can only take place.

I just wanted to make sure that the added noise was normal in the Corolla in case I have to take it to the dealer's mechanic before the warranty expires. I still have until May 2015 or so, I imagine since it is a 2012 Corolla. My wife was riding with me, and when she heard the noise she said, "is that noise by the back end normal ?" She is used to her Rav 4 :)
