My daughter's 2008 Corolla was stolen and then recovered 3 weeks later. We have the car home and I'm trying to determine if it's worth fixing or just write it off. At this point the biggest issue is the ignition switch/lock cylinder is trashed (looks like they took a hammer and chisel to it). The conductor ring (chip key) is gone, with just the small stand copper wire hanging out. I can get the original key into the slot and get the engine to turn over, but it won't start. Has gas, oil, coolant, etc. I want to get it running to see if the thieves trashed the engine or trans, before I tackle the other damage. So, do I just need to replace the lock cylinder and go from there or is there a way to bypass the transponder system temporarily? Any help is appreciated.
