I was informed by my shop that the angle of the shaft going into the hub assembly is pretty extreme. Unlike the passenger side being almost straight into the hub from the transmission.
They told me that coming out of the tranmission, it angles back and has to turn back straight at the hub at a good amount of an angle. I just had a transmission crack on the D/S at the output housing. They are thinking there is something wrong with the way the shaft has to angle from the trans to the hub and putting an undue amount of stress on the transmission output housing.
A few things checked...
I measured the wheel base on each side. I measured 82 13/16" on the D/S and 83" on the P/S. Giving 3/16" shorter on the D/S. I can't imagine that would cause anything wrong. The car had no problems being aligned before and after the transmission replacement.
The shop looked at the angle of the valve cover to the firewall to see if it looked like it was sitting crooked. They stated that it looked normal to them.
My son has the car 4 1/2 hours away in college and it will be a few weeks before he comes back home.
I would like someone with a 97 Corolla to remove the D/S front tire and place the control arm down onto a jack stand to put weight on it. And then take a picture or two to see the angle of the shaft coming out of the transmission and into the hub.
I just thought of something. Maybe the CV joints are binding and cause issues. hmmmm
Thanks in advance for anyone that can help with this issue.
