Aftermarket Security Feature Gone Wrong?

Hey everyone, I have a 2008 Toyota Corolla S w/138K miles. I bought it in 2012 with 77K miles from a private dealer who informed me that the car came from California, and it had an aftermarket security feature that required the blinker/signal to be turned to the right before starting the car. If the blinker is not engaged to the right, the car will not start--no clicks, turns, nothing. This feature has been interesting to have on the car; good for security but frustrating for valet/car washes/oil changes. The car has been great and given us no problems up until this year. In July and September of this year--and it has only happened twice--the car hasn't started, even when the signal was turned to the right. The crazy thing is, when we've gone back to tow the car 30-60 minutes later, the car starts up like nothing happened! Two different mechanic shops have fully inspected the car, and they haven't found anything. Last week we took it to an auto security/audio shop to have the feature removed to eliminate all possible variables for why the car wouldn't start, and they were baffled. We were told that nothing aftermarket has been installed on the steering column/blinker assembly itself, the wiring for the blinker all are healthy, and no aftermarket relay is installed under the hood. They had never seen anything like it. They told us that the only other option would be to take apart the entire front dash and inspect another relay? that is under there that could have been altered, but wanted to do more research before incurring higher costs. Obviously, I am at a loss. Does anyone have any advice or experience with this?
