94 corolla base automatic transmission problems

My son has a 94 base. It seems not to be shifting into second gear and it makes a grinding sound when decelerating. I figure the shifting problem may have to do with a bad solenoid, but I am unsure about the grinding sound. The grinding seems to come from the front left of the car.

I can't seem to find any test info for the solenoid. Does anyone know the ohm range of the solenoids?

I am a pretty good mechanic, I was thinking I may need to rebuild the transmission. I am having trouble finding a shop manual with instructions for the rebuild....

Any tips or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried Chilton's manuals? chiltondiy.com indicates it has instructions for installation and removal, though as you say the rebuild may not be included. Mine's manual-shift.
