93 Corolla mystery problem. Please, help!

It's a 93 dx 1.8 liter automatic tranny. It is time for inspection to get the tag renewed. The problem is all of a sudden, the car started smelling like unburned gas, like it was running way too rich. Checked spark plugs they where covered with black soot. Replaced the plugs. Check all four spark plug wires and they where fine. Distributor cap had a small crack. So, we replaced cap then tried to set timing.

No matter what we did we could not set the timing where it would not be too rich or lean or run right. It either put out tons of hyro-carbons or tons soot and still ran like crap.

Then checked the only O2 sensor it has and it was covered with soot. Blew it out with compressed air and reinstalled it. No change in behavior.

Tried disconnecting O2 sensor connector. Test drove car and it made no difference. Car did not run any better or worse. It was as if there was never even a sensor installed. So, we pulled codes and there were none.

I repeat no codes at all.

Back probed the O2 sensor wires after car was up to temp. and did not get any voltage readings.

Tried a different O2 sensor (used) and same result. No readings at all.

Please, if anyone reading this has any suggestions as to what this might be. Please let me know asap. Running out of time to pass inspection to renew tag..

Did you get this resolved?
Sometimes a weak spark can cause this condition, you might check your spark by removing a plug and visually inspecting by holding it near a bolt head while cranking. You want a hot spot.. white with blue tinge.
Or maybe your timing belt took a crap too
