2005 Corolla intermittent A/T gear selection issues

#1
Hi all,

2005 Corolla, 230k miles, bought new, maintained religiously, including trans fluid changes (drain only, no power flushes).

Transmission shifts great and fluid was changed around 15k miles ago with Toyota type 4, is at the correct level and still looks fresh.

The car recently developed an issue where sometimes when shifting from Drive to Park, it feels like the car is possibly still in gear and pushes against the stop in the trans. Move the shifter to Reverse and the car is effectively in Park. Move the shifter to Neutral and it's in Drive. When this sequence of events happens, there's no Reverse at all. Only consistent way to get everything back to normal is to shut the car off, then turn it back on, after which it shifts through the gears like it should. No codes thrown, no problems cranking (which probably rules out the neutral safety switch), no shift quality issues otherwise, shifter moves through all the detents normally and is not loose.

Bought a new OE shifter cable which I have yet to install, but I have a suspicion this isn't the problem. Without any codes thrown, does anyone know if I'm on the right track? The fact that Reverse disappears when this happens has me concerned. I've seen similar issues reported by other people, but never any resolution.

Thanks!
