2003 corolla vvt ?

have a 03 corolla that just quit about a week ago and wouldn't start but cranked over so I pulled the valve cover to check the chain and it looked ok, next I had someone hit the key and turn it over and seen the intake cam just sit and not spin but the rear cam spun ??, anyone ever heard of this before?, thanks, from seattle

I have an 08 Matrix with a similar problem. 140,000 miles.
I will be checking for a broken camshaft or the cam sprocket locking key shearing off allowing the sprocket to spin while the camshaft does not turn.
I have seen this on a Honda Civic engine.
have learned that the Rav4 engine is an interference motor.
Hope the chain did not did not take a dump causing a possible collision between the intake valves and pistons which might cause the camshaft key to shear off.
