2003 Corolla S Problems

#1
I am new here and I really didn't want to have my first post be to beg people for help but I am not so car-savvy.

I have a friend who has an 03 Corolla S which refuses to crank. The battery was last checked in August 2013 and the car has been in an out of the mechanic for other small problems (mainly cosmetic issues). The car doesn't crank when turning the key and you hear absolutely nothing the more you try.

The lights dim when I turn the key and the radio turns off like normal if you hold the key in position. The gear shift is locked and won't move but sometimes I get it to move and when I shifted to neutral after not using it for a long time it tries to crank but the noise is so faint that it's almost unnoticeable.

We have tried to jump cables and start the car in neutral and park but it refuses to even try to start. I opened the fuse box and looked at every single fuse, up close, and none of them appear to be blown. I did not, however, use a continuity/multimeter to check them but really none of them look dead. I've installed numerous amps and car stereos and when fuses are blown it's pretty obvious unless its a slight crack in the fuse. I want to change all of the fuses just in case but first I want to check in here to see if it would be something else.

I looked around and read a multitude of things and really just want some clarification. If you've read this wordy post this far then thank you and I just want to know why this damn car won't turn over.

(Let me just mention that it was used for like a year after he bought it and the entire week before it refused to start it would start but very slowly. It would take a really long time to start and you would hear it crank and keep trying to start until it ultimately started. It was like that for a week but the starting time got longer and longer and the noises grew more and more faint as he started it over time. Now it doesn't crank, no noise, nothing.)

Welcome to the Corolla Forum!:):clap::thumbup1::balloon::party::rockon:

By your description, it sounds like the battery has reached the end of its life, or the alternator is not recharging the battery.

If you take your Corolla to an Advance Auto Parts or Autozone parts store, they will test the battery, charging and starter for your for free and let you know what is going on with your car.

Let us know how you make out.
