1998 Corolla - Blank Odo, Speedo Zero, Transmission Fails

Hi, this problem starts about an hour after driving in traffic and usually at night.
1) ODO LCD display goes blank
2) speedometer immediately goes to zero
3) the transmission starts going erraticaly. Even if I keep accelerating the car itself wont accelerate

I turn it off and wait 10 minutes, then turn it on and everything goes back to normal but after a mile or so the problem will start again

Any clue? has this happened to you before?

You might want to check the speed sensor. I had a similar problem on another car (not a Corolla) which gave me the same symptoms as you describe, with the exception of the LCD going blank and changing the speed sensor (which sends speed data to the cluster and the trans) fixed it.
