1989 DLX Wagon-Need Advice!

#1
I have a 1989 DLX Wagon that i just got. It needed a new starter and the carb needed rebuilt. After fixing these things I went to start the car. It tried to start and almost did. Then the car just completely shut off. No power at all. No dash lights no headlights nothing. Batt is good. Tried to jump start it and one of the grounds off the carb/intake maniflold started to melt. Im guessing im grounded out somewhere or a relay/fuse is stuck/fried. And Ideas?

Strange

I would try using a volt meter and test the frame to see if its making a full connection. Then I suggest checking EVERY ground. Replacing Fuses will do no good with a bad groung cause they will continue to pop.

Definitely sounds like you are missing grounds or the ground wires are fraying or suffering some other means of high resistance. If that wire is melting, it is probably because that ground was stuck taking the brunt of the electrical circuit to ground.

A car should have a few grounds. Get a manual, locate all of the grounds and make sure they have near 0 resistance, and make sure none are missing.
