Good news! The issue has been solved and it turned out to be a wheel bearing. Replaced the bearing and no more thumping.

I get the same thumping noise, only with me it starts around 55 MPH and the thumping increases/decreases with the speed. I had the CV joints refurbished, that did not solve the problem. The mechanic felt that the noise was coming from the wheels/tires. I had the wheels checked at 2 tire places...
